Regenerating Ecosystems
Indonesia’s landscapes are degrading, especially in its dry Eastern parts. This puts food security and welfare of mothers and their children at risk - while increasing the prevalence of stunting.
Together with our partners, we’re working on large-scale regeneration projects which will allow women farmers to grow income-generating fibres and food crops on previously depleted soil using the indigenous agricultural wisdom of Tumpang Sari.
As we strive for a more sustainable future, it's easy to overlook the silent force beneath our feet: soil. While renewable energy and electric mobility get most of the attention, the critical role of healthy soil in mitigating climate change often goes unnoticed.
We’re working to change that.
Returning Life to the Soil
Through our reforestation and regenerative farming projects, we leverage local, indigenous wisdom to repair depleted soils and turn them into natural carbon sinks - while creating new opportunities for smallholder farmers.
By planting diverse crops, avoiding tilling and replacing chemical fertilisers and pesticides with natural ones, each hectare of regenerated soil can hold up to 25% more water, while supporting a healthy microbiome networks below ground to return the natural cycle of carbon sequestration.
Boosting Climate Resilience while Mitigating Climate Changes
Land regeneration and traditional practices like intercropping and compoting restore soil health and increase the climate resilience of local communities, especially in Indonesia’s dry East.
But there is more: If done right, these practices have potential to turn degraded lands into massive carbon sinks - sequestering as much as 11 tons CO2 per hectare every year.
That’s why we’re now conducting lean experiments in East Indonesia. Identifying the right local species and systems to maximise smallholder farmers’ returns and the amount of carbon stored in the ground.
But our efforts don't stop there. We actively educate others about the importance of soil health and advocate for wider adoption of regenerative practices. Together, we can unlock the incredible potential of soil to help us win the fight against climate change.
We invite you to join us on this journey. Learn more about regenerative farming, support brands committed to its principles, and spread awareness about this crucial yet often forgotten climate solution right under our feet.
