Empowering Women,
Reversing Climate Change
For women in Indonesia’s villages, climate change is already very real.
They can feel the impact of rising temperatures, shifting rain patterns and failing harvests. Yet with limited access to education, finance and opportunity, they are the most vulnerable and unprepared for what is to come.
Together with our partners, Rumah SukkhaCitta Foundation finds local solutions that strengthen the climate resilience of indigenous women across rural Indonesia and restore their natural environment.
We envision an inclusive world where women are recognized and rewarded for their crucial role in protecting the environment.
“Sometimes even at 9am it’s already so hot it’s hard to be outside. I can’t remember a time when our nearby river had this little water.”
— Arum, East Java
Why Women Are Key to Mitigating Climate Change
Currently, women make up 80% of the people already displaced by climate change.
According to Project Drawdown, the empowerment of women is the 3rd most powerful solution to climate change - with a potential to save 68.9 Gigatons of CO2 until 2050.
Together with our social enterprise, we have invested US$30,000+ in the education and nurturing of women leaders just like Ibu Ira.
Because women are important stewards of their environment and once empowered become powerful amplifiers of change in their communities.
“Meeting SukkhaCitta changed my life. I was told I couldn’t work as a woman.
Now, I am leading the weaving cooperative in my village. It made me much more confident and respected in my family.
And my daughters can see that.
I hope that more women feel this too.”
— Ibu Ira, Central Java
Access, not Aid
Leveraging indigenous wisdom and local culture, we meet women where they are: Focusing primarily on livelihoods from regenerative agriculture and textile craft.
We provide education and simple technologies before connecting our women to market through our award-winning social enterprise, SukkhaCitta.
Because we do not believe in charity - but the positive long-term impacts of giving women a fair chance to thrive in their own right.
"The result of SukkhaCitta’s work is a community
of self-reliant artisans and farmers across Indonesia,
women whose lives they have both supported
and changed."
Protecting Nature Through Better Livelihoods
-
Research & Craft Education
Craft is the second largest employing sector for women in rural areas. Through scholarships and our network of craftschools, we create new opportunities for women to thrive by protecting their heritage.
-
Regenerative Farming & Agro-Forestry
We restore the health of natural ecosystems and carbon sinks. From long-term reforestation projects to regenerative agriculture, leveraging traditional wisdom of our ancestors.
-
From Waste to Livelihoods
Textile and agricultural waste is a big issue in Indonesia. Most of it is incinerated. Through our programs, we turn pollution into livelihoods - contributing to a thriving, circular economy.
