Resilient & Proud: Sustainable Livelihoods Rooted in Local Culture
Craft is one of the biggest sources of income for mothers in rural Indonesia. Together with you, we make sure these women know their rights, earn a better livelihood and become more resilient in the face of future challenges.
The Problem: A Dying Art
There was a time when local crafts - a more sustainable and meaningful way of making clothes - drove our economy. Today, the future of heritage traditions is threatened by mass-production. Polluting the environment while leaving communities behind.
Craft still is the second largest employing sector for mothers in rural Indonesia – providing a vital opportunity for the economic empowerment of women. Yet the craft is slowly dying, and with it a part of our archipelago’s cultural heritage.
The Solution: Revitalizing a Key Sector for Women
At Rumah SukkhaCitta Foundation, we work directly with some of the most marginalized women of the archipelago: Craftswomen working from home, in Villages, not factories.
Through us they get access to education – in craft and design, business skills and environmental stewardship – before we connect them to customers in 32 countries, increasing average incomes by 60% through our social enterprise, SukkhaCitta.
In our award-winning craft schools young mothers become apprentices of older, more experienced women, replacing the broken craft lineage from mother to daughter while professionalising the informal sector.
Scaling Education
Currently we operate in 11 villages and have established a network of four craft schools.
Together with you, we want to scale our proven model of cultural regeneration to reach 10,000 lives by 2030. By increasing the capacity of our craft schools and digitizing our training programs so we can make them available to last mile communities across Indonesia.
