Transforming Waste into Livelihoods

In developing countries like Indonesia, burning is currently the standard of waste management for textile and agricultural waste in Indonesia.

It is the cause of respiratory problems in communities, polluting rivers and soil with forever chemicals, while worsening the environmental crisis.

At the same time, textile waste is becoming an ever bigger issue. According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation, every second 1 garbage truck full of clothes is dumped into landfills. Less than 1% is recycled.

We believe there is a different way.

Women Leading the Solution

Since 2020, we are actively training women in Java and Bali islands to transform textile waste into sustainable products that create inclusive livelihoods.

To date, we have prevented over 122 tonnes of CO2e by keeping these textiles away from landfill. While providing much needed income for families in rural areas.

Solving the sustainable management of waste requires a lot of research, development, and capacity building in the grassroot communities.

That’s why your support is so important: With your help we will fund new machinery to unlock the required catalytic research.

Circular Villages Project

Help us turn waste into new economic opportunities for local farmers, waste collectors and weavers – increasing incomes by an expected 100%.

Your donations will fund the purchase of additional machinery to process waste into useable materials, trainings for the local communities, as well as additional research into how especially agricultural waste such as banana stem can be turned into a new kind of material for the local cottage industry.

“A key piece of SukkhaCitta’s mission  is environmental: to reduce toxic run off from dyes that textile makers dump into local waters, working with the artisans to reclaim natural dyes.”
