Regenerating Culture: Preserving the Tradition of Batik

Batik is a symbol of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, but sadly, many women are leaving this craft behind as it is very hard to earn a living as an artisan.

At Rumah SukkhaCitta, we’re dedicated to reversing this trend by offering training programs that ensure young women have the opportunity to learn and carry this tradition forward.

Why? Because craft is more than just artistry—it’s a vital part of our identity.

So when the local government of Tuban, East Java, invited us to raise awareness about this issue, we were eager to respond.

In partnership with local leaders, we organized a multi-week training program that introduced both the techniques and the deep cultural philosophy behind Batik to a new generation of women.

The training was led by Linna Setiowati, our Community and Regenerative Farming Leader, who also shared her personal journey. Linna, a fourth-generation Batik artisan, told the group how she learned the craft from her grandmother and how, through a scholarship at Rumah SukkhaCitta, she was able to reclaim her heritage and now leads her community in preserving it.

Linna’s story is a powerful reminder that when we empower women, we empower entire communities. This work—made possible by your generous donations—ensures we can continue providing education and preserving vital cultural traditions in rural Indonesia.
